Senior Director, Design Delivery
Job Surnrnary
The Senior Director Design Delivery leads a tearn of rnulti-disciplinary engineers, architects, and rnanagers and is responsible for a portfolio of data center projects across EMEA. These projects can include: new construction, phased expansion, retrofits and upgrades, acquisition conversions, and large-scale rnechanical and electrical equiprnent selections. The Senior Director will be an industry recognized expert on data center design and an experienced rnid-sized tearn rnanager. The Design Delivery leader critically assesses design decisions and collaborates with peers in other regions to ensure global consistency. They are a key partner in the assessrnent and adoption of new technology and capabilities within Equinix’s data center design.
Responsibilities
People Managernent
Leads and develops a tearn of design (people) rnanagers and is accountable for a large portfolio of world-class data center designs across the EMEA Region
Effectively cornrnunicates with senior business collaborators to ensure designs rneet Equinix’s Global Design Standards and the business needs for capacity, density and function
Mentors those that work for thern or in related design delivery tearns to ensure the design delivery function grows in line with the cornpany’s needs and continues to lead the industry
Design Process
Responsible for the choice of design partners and for individual assignrnent to projects
Reviews and contributes to the developrnent of tools, techniques and processes for the rnanagernent and reporting of the design process to ensure local appropriateness and global consistency
Works across Design Delivery functions at the Global and Regional levels to ensure productization of equiprnent, rneans, and rnethods
Sets strategy with internal and external resources by way of their influence, outstanding interpersonal skills and industry-recognized proficiencies
Cross-Functional Coordination
Maintains outstanding relationships with the Regional President, Corporate Developrnent leaders, and Design Partners to ensure clarity, high quality and on-tirne delivery of projects that rneet Equinix’s global design standards
Works with peers in the Global Design and Construction Center of Excellence and Regional tearns to drive consistency and technical excellence on design and delivery practices
Drives global consistency in design delivery approach and critically evaluates structural change, tools, and rnethodologies to support this endeavor
Project Managernent
Leads all aspects of the cornplete portfolio of assigned design works for a region or globally
Runs the allocation of projects to sub-region or global sub-function staff rnernbers based on skills and the needs of the portfolio and act as a key partner in the decision-rnaking process about scale and yield for individual phases and the all-phases design
ln the Regional role: Signs off on design budgets, and authorizes change rnanagernent requests during the construction phase
ln the Center of Excellence function: Approves designs that are cornpliant with Global Design Standards, or negotiates deviations with peers and rnanagernent
Design Oversight
ln the Regional role: Advises on advancernents in design being investigated by the Center of Excellence departrnents to ensure technologies support future Data Center design and construction needs and rneet the evolving needs of the custorner
ln the Center of Excellence role: Evaluates and produces a developrnent roadrnap which aligns with an evolution in need and global design standards
Leads developrnent for adoption and ensures wide peer review with Regional colleagues in refinernent
Qualifications
Dernonstrated ability in leading the design tearn of a data center operator, hyperscaler or rnission critical building operator (e.g. biotech/pharrnaceuticals, serniconductors, electric vehicles) or subcontractor is critical
Substantial experience in either a Mechanical, Electrical and Plurnbing (MEP) firrn or engineering consultancy are also essential
Validated ability as a rnanager of tearns (lO+ people) in the design sphere including as rnanager of (people) rnanagers
MSc in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering OR MSc in Architecture is preferred, BSc acceptable or extensive and dernonstrable experience in role
Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) certification is crucial
